Riccardo Polosa

Professor of Medicine, University of Catania

Prof. Riccardo Polosa is Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Catania and a specialist in Respiratory Diseases and Clinical Immunology. He is Founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Tobacco Research and Scientific Director of the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR). His research spans asthma and COPD, smoking-related respiratory disease, smoking prevention and cessation, tobacco harm reduction, and the health effects of novel nicotine and tobacco products, including their oral and dental implications. He leads multidisciplinary programmes integrating biomarkers, imaging, and patient-reported outcomes to improve early detection and quantify health changes after smoking cessation or switching to combustion-free products. Since 2009, his team has conducted pioneering clinical and translational studies on electronic cigarettes and related technologies, and was the first globally to publish a randomized controlled trial on e-cigarettes, informing clinical and regulatory discussions.
